Running the Word Paths

Words are like pesky base runners.

You've got to keep them
close to the sack.
Check them.
Throw over
every once in a while.
Let them know
you know
they're there.

You never know
when they're going to go
and steal a sack on you,
making you look foolish.

They dangle their arms,
dancing nimbly,
trying to disrupt your game,
jaunty, cocksure.

You got to check them back.
Soft toss over once or twice
to keep them honest.

It scuffs up their shirtfronts a bit,
sure,
but it shows they're playing hard.
